Khanya Mehlo South African, b. 1977

I love paint. It talks to me. The colours have different emotions.

As an artist we are the voice of those who can't talk.

Khanya Mehlo, a  Cape Town-based artist, began drawing at eight, inspired by local struggles and school experiences. With limited formal art education, he studied at the Community Arts Project (CAP), worked on Robben Island, and briefly studied animation and design. Mehlo's career includes various residencies, notably at the Castle of Good Hope, Greatmore Studios, Bag Factory, and Becomo Art Centre, where he also taught art. His art has been featured in international exhibitions, books, and local galleries, including post-fire exhibitions from his home in Khayelitsha. His work, often in oils and acrylics, reflects social commentary and community engagement, continuing from his makeshift studio in Qanduqandu.
